Missouri Gov. Greitens claims prosecutor hid evidence until after 'sexy workout' allegations

But reaction from fellow Republicans indicates Greitens may have a more hard time - in part, because allegations about Trump's behavior were known before his election, whereas Greitens had cultivated a campaign persona of an all-American hero. The speaker of the state house, also a Republican, said he would call a special session of the legislature to consider disciplinary action, including impeachment.

Hartzler's strongly worded statement in response to Wednesday's report by a bipartisan House investigative committee stopped short of calling directly on Greitens to resign, but Hartzler said his alleged behavior is not "befit for a leader in Missouri or anywhere else for that matter".

The special House investigatory committee is to make a recommendation after the regular session ends May 18 about whether Greitens should face impeachment proceedings to try to oust him.

"Should the governor choose not to resign, I am persuaded that he has not only burned bridges, he has blown them up to where it will be impossible for him to effectively lead the state going forward", Kehoe said in a written statement.

Attorney General Josh Hawley, a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate seat held by Democrat Claire McCaskill, said the report "contains shocking, substantial and corroborated evidence of wrongdoing" by the 44-year-old governor.

Missouri mega-donor calls on Greitens to step down

Greitens admitted the extramarital affair with his former hairdresser in January, but described it as consensual and denied allegations that he threatened her. Greitens, a combat veteran and a Republican, was elected governor in 2016.

Attorneys for Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens are asking a judge to dismiss a criminal indictment against him while accusing prosecutors of misconduct for withholding a videotaped interview of a woman with whom he had an affair.

In February, Greitens was indicted on a charge of first degree felony invasion of privacy. He is set to go to trial May 14.

In it, the circuit attorney claims discovery of the video was made Tuesday, and that it was delivered to the defense after all associated notes relating to it were gathered together on Thursday.

"We believe as much as anybody that victims need to be protected but this woman was not a victim", said defense attorney Jim Martin. This is inconsistent with her statements in the video interview with the Circuit Attorney.

He is accused of taking a compromising photograph of the woman in question without her consent to use as a means of blackmail to keep their relationship secret.

Gardner's office filed a motion later Thursday calling the allegations an attempted distraction.

The woman's attorney, Scott Simpson, declined to comment on the video, citing a gag order in the criminal case.

But the testimony revealed in the state legislative report has spurred leading Republicans not to wait until the outcome of that trial to urge Greitens to step down. He later added: "This is exactly like what's happening with the witch hunts in Washington, D.C". "I think that might do it", Schaaf said.

Greitens appointed Republican Bill Birkes and Democrat Wayne Henke. "He ran as something different than everybody else, and Trump was more in some ways upfront about who he was". He's a former Rhodes Scholar, Navy SEAL officer, author and motivational speaker who gained a national platform after founding The Mission Continues charity to help military veterans become involved in their communities.

In their letter, the GOP state senators told Mr. Trump that the governor was taught in the military "always to obey his Commander-in-Chief".

Eric Greitens (R) on Thursday said he had proof prosecutors hid evidence from the the state's House of Representatives, which he said undermined the sexual misconduct claim against him. She said Greitens then grabbed her in a hug and laid her down.

She praised the "deliberate steps" taken by the Missouri General Assembly to respond to the allegations and said she was praying for the governor's wife, Sheena Greitens, their children and others who have been affected by the scandal.
