'Several injured' as tour bus carrying fans to Masters overturns

A tour bus with 19 people heading to The Masters Golf Tournament flipped in Augusta.

The bus was en route to the world-renown golf tournament, which started at the Augusta National Golf Club Thursday morning.

The bus ran off the right side of the road, the statement said, before the driver over-corrected to the left, overturning the vehicle in the median.

Georgia State Patrol officers told Atlanta's ABC affiliate WJBF that the driver, identified by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution as 61-year-old Steven Hoppenbrouwer, had been charged with driving under the influence and failure to maintain his lane.

Nine victims were taken to Doctors Hospital in Augusta; one person is in critical condition, one victim is in serious condition, and one patient is in fair condition, the hospital said.

A total of 18 people were on the bus. It's not clear if Hoppenbrouwer is an employee with the company or had been contracted to drive the bus.

It is not known at this time who was on the bus - or where they were from. WhitePages.com showed there were two places listed as Hoppenbrouwer's residence as of March. 18 people were onboard the bus at the time of the crash.

At least one lane of traffic is blocked both directions.

"Major incident here. Masters traffic affected for sure", state Transportation Department officials said on Twitter.

The bus, which was carrying a group from Atlanta to the tournament, is owned by Jet Executive Limousine, troopers said.

All seven people being treated at AUMC are adults.

A phone listing for Hoppenbrouwer was disconnected.
