Alton Sterling shooting: No criminal charges for police officers

Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry announced on Tuesday that an investigation determined that the officers' actions were "reasonable", according to CNN.

The two police officers involved in the fatal shooting of Alton Sterling in 2016 will not be charged by the State of Louisiana because evidence showed they acted properly, a state official said on Tuesday.

"It hurts, though, to see them get away and go on with their lives", Dunn said.

During a news conference Tuesday, Quinyetta McMillon said the way the officers killed Alton Sterling was "in cold blood".

The announcement comes almost two years after Sterling was shot and killed outside a convenience store in the Louisiana capital. What differs here is the AG investigators have been trying to determine if the officers involved, Blane Salamoni and Howie Lake, should face any state criminal charges in the death of Sterling.

Family members of a black man fatally shot in a struggle with two white police officers are railing against a decision by the state attorney general to not prosecute the officers. The officers' body cameras and a store surveillance camera also recorded the encounter, but those videos have not been released. Apparently, it was enough that Sterling failed to comply with the officer's orders, even though there was no visible proof that Sterling even reached for a gun in the first place. As a convicted criminal, Mr Sterling could not legally carry a gun.

Sterling's family said it would continue to follow through with a civil lawsuit they filed previous year. The attorney general has just confirmed that charges will not be pursed.

"The Louisiana Department of Justice can not proceed with a prosecution of either Officer Lake or Officer Salamoni". Disturbing footage revealed Sterling being pinned down by two white police officers, where he was shot shortly thereafter. The next day Philando Castile was shot and killed in Minnesota by police officer and the aftermath was streamed on Facebook by his girlfriend.

The officers were responding to a report that Sterling was selling CDs and that he allegedly threatened a man with a gun. Late past year, a judge ruled that dozens of protesters should receive between $500 and $1,000 each as payment for having their constitutional rights denied due to the use of excessive force.

"This decision was not taken lightly".

The heated and tragic atmosphere in Baton Rouge continued after the shooting, with three officers gunned down in an ambush less than two weeks later. Their suit alleges the shooting fit a pattern of racist behaviour and excessive force by the Baton Rouge police.

"We are confident in our ability to fairly and ethically review law enforcement use of force cases in Sacramento County".
