Seeded Xavier blows late lead, falls to Florida State

At the under-eight media timeout on Sunday night in Nashville, Xavier was in control of the game.

For Florida State, Angola seemed to have caught his stride from the field, collecting 15 points, six rebounds and three assists.

The Musketeers joined No. 2 seed Cincinnati on the sad, sad road back to the Queen City after losing a 12-point lead in the last 10:30 and falling to No. 9 seed Florida State 75-70 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Seminoles couldn't get closer than 13 while suffering the disappointing season-ending setback.

Even in a two-possession game, a technical foul would have given the Musketeers hope.

The Seminoles made Xavier the second No. 1 seed ousted in tournament's first weekend, sending the Musketeers out along with Virginia. Made it to the Elite Eight in 2015 and lost in the national championship game previous year.

Florida State rallied back from a 12-point deficit in the final 10 minutes to knock off Xavier 75-70 on Sunday night and earn its first trip to the Sweet 16 since 2011.

Gonzaga advanced to the Sweet 16 as they rallied to take down Ohio State with an explosive late game run.

It was not enough for OH to lose one heartbreaker at Bridgestone Arena - Nevada came back from 22 points down to beat Cincinnati - but on Sunday evening, the fair denizens of that state could only watch as No. 1 seed Xavier suffered the same fate. 11 seed Xavier routed the Seminoles 91-66 a year ago in the very same round in the same region. FSU took down a Xavier team that many thought could reach the Final Four - and they did it in comeback fashion. It was Florid State's first lead since the 2:07 mark of the first half, and proved to be the game-winner.

Florida State's Imani Wright, who had made a school record 103 3-pointers heading into the NCAA Tournament, was 0 of 12 from beyond the arc in the two games, including missing all 10 shots on Monday.

Scruggs hit two free throws with 1:49 left, and that was the last points for Xavier. Mfiondu Kabengele scored his second straight bucket tying it up at 68 with 2:32 to go.

However, some timely forced turnovers and scrappy defense coupled with one of their best games of free throw shooting all season helped FSU gain sweet revenge for last years loss.

Cierra Dillard led the way with 22 points in the win for Buffalo. Johnathan Williams (13.6 points, 8.4 rebounds) is the team's leading scorer.

This is the 16th NCAA Tournament appearance for the Seminoles, and they are seeking their 19th win in school history. Gonzaga comes into this game as the favorite.

Gonzaga ranks 14th in rebounds per game (39.8) while Florida State ranks 160th in rebounds allowed per game (34.9).
