Osaka cruises past Kasatkina to claim maiden title — WTA Indian Wells

"'We just needed to get out of here, so that's basically how that happened", Osaka explained.

It was hardly surprising that there were nerves. "We're going to play a lot of finals together later".

Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka defeated No. 20 Daria Kasatkina, of Russian Federation, in the women's singles finale.

Halep said her early struggles in the final set were from nerves and frustration with the playing conditions. By now Osaka was looking more and more ominous. Kasatkina missed on the first two but another Osaka error handed the break over to the Russian.

Osaka's title capped a run that included beating two-time victor Maria Sharapova, No. 5 Karolina Pliskova and top-ranked Simona Halep. Kasatkina delayed the inevitable. She also has a better record having gone 167-75 in singles so far compared with Osaka's 149-104.

Although the end felt a little muted with a victor from Osaka, take nothing away from her mental attitude throughout the whole tournament. "So I wanted her to do whatever she wanted to do, and I was just going to sit back and, like, see what she does".

Meanwhile, Juan Martin del Potro rallied from three match points down in the third set and beat top-ranked Roger Federer 6-4, 6-7 (8), 7-6 (2) to win the BNP Paribas Open and hand the Swiss superstar his first loss of the year. I tried also to push a little bit the ball and then to hit it.

She continued": "She's very powerful.

In the quarterfinals she faced another former #1 in the shape of the big serving Karolina Pliskova. Osaka closed out the biggest win of her career with a backhand victor that ticked the baseline.

"This is probably going to be the worst tennis speech of all time", she nervously added.

Kasatkina came within two points of losing her semi-final against Venus Williams on Friday, but recovered to post a fifth top-10 victory of the season.

"Let's say I'm living by this sentence: Dream and do it".

Afterward, she admitted, "That was pretty embarrassing".

"I was extremely stressed and extremely nervous, but my plan was to fake that I'm very calm", Osaka told reporters.

"I wasn't that aggressive, " Osaka said.

"Hi, I'm Naomi, " she began, trying out her wry sense of humor on the crowd.

"Hi I'm Naomi, okay never mind", she said with a laugh. But then when he called me, I freaked out.

Consecutive service holds followed, though it was Osaka who faced more troubles, especially with Kasatkina earning another break point in the seventh game.

The two players will have plenty of time to reminisce about the final as they were planning on sharing a private jet to next week's WTA stop, the Miami Open.
