Google Pledges $300 Million to Clean Up False News
Mar 21, 2018, 07:56
Google on Tuesday revealed its plan fight misinformation and fake news on the internet.
Google will spend US$300 million (S$395 million) over three years on GNI to "elevate and strengthen quality journalism, promote business models to drive sustainable growth and empower news organisations".
Along with the initiative, Google announcedSubscribe with Google, a tool that streamlines the sign up and subscription process for premium news sources. With this move, Google also has a chance to rival Amazon, which remains by far the most formidable online shopping platform in the United States.
Google and the big-box retailers are teaming up on a new program in which those companies can have their products listed on Google Search, the Google Express shopping service, and the Google Assistant app on mobile phones and voice devices. According to Google, Subscribe with Google reflects the company's intentions to "help journalism thrive" online. With this, people will be able to easily subscribe to paid news outlets using their Google account. So from here on out, to continue its efforts, the company is launching Google News Initiative (GNI). You get the news, your preferred publications get more money and better metrics - it all sounds great in theory, but it'll be a while yet before Google's system becomes ubiquitous.
The $300m investment is in addition to the pre-existing $150m Digital News Initiative innovation fund and will be used to support products, partnerships and publishers.
On YouTube's home page, Gringas said that a breaking news section, featuring verified authoritative sources has already been launched in 10 countries, helping users quickly learn the news of the day. None of the launch partners are located in Canada, but Google promised more publishers are coming soon. Unlike the search results for similar previous shootings, which surfaced stories from hoax websites and toxic message boards, the results on both Google and YouTube for topics related to the Maryland shooting were dominated by stories from legitimate mainstream publications.
We work with news organizations around the world to develop and deploy technology that improves newsroom efficiency, creates enriching storytelling experiences, and protects journalists from cyber attacks around the world.
The subscription features will be rolled out to 17 launch partners, including the New York Times, Washington Post, the Financial Times and the Telegraph. "We'll be expanding that model globally".
"We know that success can only be achieved by working together, and we look forward to collaborating with the news industry to build a stronger future for journalism".
