Packers sign RFA CB Fuller to offer sheet

The Chicago Bears needed all of two hours to decide on matching the Green Bay Packers' offer sheet for cornerback Kyle Fuller.

Per Rapoport, Fuller's deal is for four years and worth $56 million with $18 million guaranteed.

The transition tag for cornerbacks comes with a salary of $12.971 million for 2018 (the franchise tag number would have been $14.975 million).

The Packers wanted to add Fuller, and the Bears left an opening by giving him the transition tag. Had they used the franchise tag and lost Fuller, they would have received two first-round picks.

When it comes to National Football League free agent cornerback Kyle Fuller, the Green Bay Packers began a game of chicken with the Chicago Bears. Chicago also owned the right to match any offer from other teams, without any compensation coming its way if it were to pass. The fact that the Packers extended the offer sheet continues to be surprising, in part because it goes against their past approach to free agency, and in part because the money and cap space could have been tied up for as many as five days, if the Bears had made a decision to take their full allotment of time to ponder whether to match. Chicago picked him in the first round of the 2014 draft. If Green Bay's operatives use creative accounting to front-load the deal, however, it will be interesting to see if the contract's parameters alter their longstanding rival's plans.

Signing Fuller to a massive first year doesn't help much because the Bears have some cap flexibility. The Packers showed interest in Breeland early in free agency before he signed a three-year, $24 million deal with the Carolina Panthers. He inks a contract that makes him one of the highest-paid players at cornerback. If not, Gutekunst's NFC North rivals have to take on the contract.

Fuller rejoins recently re-signed Prince Amukamara in what could be a solid secondary next season, especially with defensive coordinator Vic Fangio back calling the shots for new coach Matt Nagy.
