Louise Slaughter, 'Trailblazer' In Congress, Dies At 88

Rep. Louise Slaughter, the 88-year-old Democratic representative from NY, has died after a fall at her Washington, D.C. home, which left her hospitalized with a concussion.

"Recognizing the unique value of RIT/NTID's mission in educating deaf and hard-of-hearing students, Louise was a staunch advocate for funding for our college, said NTID President Gerry Buckley".

"We at RIT are deeply saddened by this loss", said RIT President David Munson.

She won with 51 percent of the vote, though she later said she was almost defeated at the polls by sexism.

Slaughter's chief of staff Liam Fitzsimmons released a statement Friday morning on his boss's death.

The Democratic lawmaker from NY was serving her 16th term in the House of Representatives.

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said she was "heartbroken" by the news of Slaughter's passing.

Slaughter rose to become the first woman to chair the powerful House Committee on Rules since it was formally constituted on April 2, 1789, and was serving as its ranking member, according to her office.

"Congresswoman Louise Slaughter was a giant", said Democratic Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer. Her passing will leave a gaping hole in our hearts and our nation.

She served in the New York State Assembly from 1982 to 1986 and the Monroe County Legislature between 1976 and 1979.

Potential successors include Lovely Warren, 40, the first black female mayor of Rochester whom New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo (D) once nearly selected as his lieutenant governor.

Slaughter was born Dorothy McIntosh in Kentucky in 1929. She received a bachelor's degree in microbiology and a master's degree in public health from the University of Kentucky.

Slaughter's husband Robert died in 2014.

Her political involvement began with her election to a Monroe County legislative seat in 1975.

She served as the chairwoman from 2007 to 2011.

In recent years she pressed the FDA on the Essure female sterilization device and criticized the Pentagon for not doing enough to protect American troops who use shoulder-fired weapons.

House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) in a statement said Slaughter "was unrelenting in fighting for her ideas and the people back home in Western New York". Whoever is elected, would then fill out the term, and could run again in November. Redistricting in 2012 dramatically altered Slaughter's district, fueling speculation that she might retire. She pointed to her successes, saying she wasn't sure someone new in the job could be as effective a representative as she has been.

Speaking with The News, Pelosi reflected on the colorful character from upstate NY who became her ideological partner and a top lieutenant. The Slaughter family is incredibly grateful for all the support during this hard time.

In 2006, Rep. Slaughter authored and introduced the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge (STOCK) Act. She moved to NY following graduate school at the University of Kentucky, where she earned a masters degree in public health.

Rep. Louise Slaughter, a Democrat who represented the Rochester area for more than 30 years, died on Friday.

Slaughter famously co-authored the 1994 Violence Against Women Act, which not only changed our national conversation around issues of domestic violence, but saw a 67% drop in DV after its passage.
