Federer can match his best start to a season if he overcomes Chung in the quarter-finals - he is now 15-0 in 2018, and can equal his 16-0 from 2006 when he was 24-years-old.

It is his best start to the season since 2006 when he started 16-0 and won 33 of his first 34 matches.

"Today was a tough challenge in the wind", Federer said. Back in the Top 50 in the ATP Rankings, the Croatian dropped just nine games in his opening three rounds before stamping his authority on #NextGenATP American Taylor Fritz in a three-set fourth-round clash.

That allowed Federer to repeatedly put Chardy under some pressure, although it took until the 11th game for him to clinch his first break.

Federer again took the only break in the second set to go up 5-4.

Kerber never managed a break point against Kasatkina's serve. He also lifted the trophy here in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2012 and a year ago. The problem is Federer doesn't care how well you're playing, as he simply finds ways to win regardless and has been impossible to bet against for the last two years.

Roger Federer (1), Switzerland, def. Jeremy Chardy, France, 7-5, 6-4.

"Yeah, and then also Rotterdam was great". The two memorably met in the semifinals of this year's Australian Open, when Chung had to retire with severe blisters on his feet. "So I'm just happy I'm on a good run", the 20-time Grand Slam victor added. "How good will still remain to be seen". It was the tournament where Chung, the explosive 21-year-old, became the first Korean to progress as far at a Grand Slam tournament.

Cuevas bounced back, breaking Chung's serve twice to take the score up to 5-3, but there was no stopping Chung, who won the final game to take the set and the match.

Coric improved to 10-3 on the season and 2-0 against Fritz.

America's Sam Querrey booked his quarter-final spot with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Spaniard Feliciano Lopez.

World No.1 Simona Halep entered the semifinal by defeating Petra Martic on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old Russian needed just 58 minutes on Thursday to brush aside the German. "He seems fine and he played a great match (Wednesday)". "She had a tough game".

"I just fought and that's maybe why I won because I refuse to lose".

Halep will continue to be No.1 at the end of the event after Caroline Wozniacki was eliminated after losing to Daria Kasatkina on Tuesday.

Osaka knocked off No. 5 Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic 6-2, 6-3. Chung has won five of his last six matches on hard court. "So I'm just happy I'm on a good run", said Federer.

Both met in January at the semi-finals of Australian Open.
