The 49ers had about $70 million in available cap space, until recently making a huge splash signing All-Pro cornerback Richard Sherman.

- Colin Kaepernick's 2017 National Football League absence: While Sherman called it "unfortunate" that former Colin Kaepernick did not join any other team after opting out of his 49ers contract last March, Sherman noted that Kaepernick's collusion case against "is so hard to prove" because teams can say the quarterback didn't fit their scheme or ideal throwing motion. The 49ers appear to have come out the winners of the agreement, which Sherman negotiated himself.

"I'm vengeful in that way", Sherman said of facing Seattle, later adding: "I love the (Seahawks) fan base to death, and I loved playing there".

On his first conference call with the Bay Area media on Monday, Sherman was asked about Witherspoon. "I've played at a high level, and at the end of the day, if I had been on my second contract up in Seattle, and we get all the way to training camp, and they cut me at the end of the training camp, I don't get a dollar of it - the $11 million that I'm due".

ESPN also reported that John Lynch, the general manager of the 49ers said that the team is looking forward to Sherman sharing his experience and passion for football. Incentives and bonuses could push the deal to $39 million, but only if he reverts to All-Pro form. "I appreciated him being willing to give me a chance at it".

So when Sherman speaks, people listen, and that is something the 49ers will have to adjust to in a locker room that grew admirably tight amid last season's adversity (0-9 start) and eventual triumph (5-0 finish). Allowing below a 50 percent completion percentage into his coverage in all but one season (where it was 51.8), Sherman has never allowed a passer rating into his coverage of more than 75.5 (in 2017).

The former Seahawks cornerback is getting a three-year, $39 million deal that includes nearly no guaranteed money. And he told me the story of why he wore the number and it actually meant a lot to him. In discussing what he was seeking in his next team, Sherman made it abundantly clear he wanted to go only to a team he felt could contend. The only thing better would be if 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan fires his offensive coordinator and brings back Jim Harbaugh.

"I'm vengeful in that way", Sherman said. The 49ers have skin in the game.
