Seahawks to release star cornerback Richard Sherman

Richard Sherman hasn't been a free agent for 24 hours, but already he has a long list of suitors, including the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Signing with the 49ers would keep him on the West Coast and also near where he went to college. Smith, who caught Sherman's tip of a Colin Kaepernick pass for a game-clinching interception in the 2014 NFC title game, is under contract with the 49ers through 2021 after signing with them past year. While that still leaves room for at least one veteran, it would be odd for Detroit to go for a big-money veteran cornerback when there are much bigger needs elsewhere.

The Seahawks officially announced the move Friday and thanked Sherman in a statement that read: "Thank you for helping win championships, shape our culture and define success in Seattle".

Yet, the 49ers are expected to be cautious when evaluating Sherman after an Achilles injury sidelined him for the final seven games last season.

Sherman turns 30 on March 30.

Bringing in a player of Sherman's stature would send a strong message that the Panthers want to make another Super Bowl in the final season for Davis and center Ryan Kalil, both of whom have said they will retire after 2018.

Sherman had surgery to fix his right Achilles in November.

The releases of Sherman and Lane leave Seattle's cornerback spot with some uncertainty heading into free agency. Also, no player who's been targeted 300-plus times over that span has allowed a lower completion percentage (47.4) or passer rating (50.9).

It is not yet clear how the four-time All-Pro defensive back will bounce back from his Achilles injury.
