Waymo's self-driving tech spreads to semi trucks

Waymo CEO John Krafcik has alluded to autonomous trucks before, and so the assumption was that the company would eventually pursue some kind of autonomous trucking service.

To be clear, this isn't the first time Waymo has tested their semi trucks in public - the company is well aware of the many differences between driving a semi truck and driving a traditional minivan. Starting next week, Waymo's self-driving trucks will travel through metro Atlanta, delivering cargo to Google's data center in Douglas County, Georgia.

Waymo filed the suit previous year but after four days of testimony before a federal judge, Uber agreed to a financial settlement, a source said.

Waymo's self-driving technology - is not only experienced, but adaptable.

Waymo, which shares a parent company-Alphabet-with Google, has already been testing its self-driving trucks in California and Arizona for the past year.

Waymo says Atlanta is a great place to test the models as the city is "one of the biggest logistics hubs in the country". "If you are in the Atlanta area, look for a bright blue Waymo truck making a run", Waymo said. "The transport of freight and cargo is a critical driver for the American economy". There will be a "highly-trained" driver onboard to take over vehicle controls in the event that there is a system malfunction or some other safety-related incident occurs.

Though Waymo has been testing its self-driving semis for a year now, they're not quite ready for the big leagues yet.

Waymo is poised to change how we get a ride and now the company is focusing on how we get various goods. With Waymo's partnership with Google's logistics team, they will be able to further develop the technology and integrate it into the operations of shippers and carriers, with their network of factories, distribution centers, ports, and terminals.
