Canada Replaces First Canadian PM On Ten Dollar Bill

The new C$10 ($7.72) bill featuring Viola Desmond was presented Thursday in Nova Scotia, the province that jailed her in 1946 for sitting outside a movie theater zone that was segregated for black people.

Desmond's sister Wanda Robson removed a black cloth from an enlarged image of the new bill's design at the Halifax Central Library.

"As I said, the ultimate goal of our communications campaign is to drive different communities of interest to the core Viola Desmond/rights and social justice story - a serious and important theme", wrote Harrison.

The vertical bank note is the same size and functions the same as existing Canadian bank notes.

"One woman's actions can really make a difference", Robson, 91, said in the video of her sneak preview, shared by the Bank of Canada.

Desmond is the first African-American woman and the second woman in Canadian history to be placed on a currency.

Canada's newest bank note was unveiled during a ceremony in Halifax today by Finance Minister Bill Morneau and Bank of Canada Governor Stephen S. Poloz.

The bill also features a historic map of north end Halifax on one side, and the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg on the other.

Isaac Saney, a senior instructor of black studies at Dalhousie University, said many Canadians are unaware that slavery and segregation existed here, and often know more about US civil rights icons than those in Canada. When she was asked to sit in a Blacks-only balcony section, Desmond refused to move and she was arrested. "It's lovely", she told an audience in Halifax.

"Viola Desmond carried out a singular act of courage", said Isaac Saney, a senior instructor of black studies at Dalhousie University. "There was no movement behind her, she was ahead of the times".

Desmond died in 1965 and Nova Scotia issued a posthumous apology and pardon in 2010. And when I say suffered, I don't mean that you just couldn't do anything anymore.
