Kobe Bryant Calls Out

Longtime Celtics nemesis Kobe Bryant captured an Oscar on Sunday, as his piece "Dear Basketball" was named best animated short film.

Bryant won five championships during his lengthy basketball career.

Former Laker Kobe Bryant won an Oscar for an animated short film "Dear Basketball" at the 90th Academy Awards on Sunday.

He said: "As basketball players, we're really supposed to shut up and dribble".

Bryant's retort was a reference to a controversial statement from Fox News journalist Laura Ingraham who in February sought to chastise Cleveland Cavaliers baller LeBron James for his political commentary. "Whether you're a professional athlete or not, whether you're an actor not, you still have the ability to speak up for what it is that you believe in".

Several Twitter users pointed out the irony of Bryant winning an Oscar during the Me Too and Time's Up era. Let me say that again.

The Lakers, Magic Johnson, Paul Pierce and Dwyane Wade were also among those who paid their tributes to Bryant, while James and Portland Trail Blazers' guard Evan Turner praised the 39-year-old's powerful speech. "This is insane, man, it's insane".

"In playing basketball, the hardest thing to do is to get out of the way of yourself - to try to disassociate any sense of ego that you have".

Bryant returned to the court with his reputation damaged from the controversy but soon found his rhythm, winning back-to-back scoring titles in the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 NBA seasons and winning the NBA Most Valuable Player Award in 2008.

The film shows top moments from Bryant's career animated in hand-drawn images while he recites the letter about his devotion to the sport from a young age and a body that will no longer allow him to compete at the highest level. And to my wife Vanessa, our daughters Natalia, Gianna, and Bianka.

Following his win, Bryant addressed his comments in the press room. "Don't think that you want to be a writer - that's cute".

"When you have mentors like that in your life", he said, "everything tends to work itself out". But I'm glad we do a little bit more than that.
