Florida Senate holds Saturday session on school safety bill and gun regulations

Democrats had introduced the two-year ban as an amendment to a broader GOP-led bill on gun reforms.

An amendment from Democrats was unexpectedly added to a sprawling bill that includes gun control, school safety and mental health measures created to prevent future mass shootings like the one February 14 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland that left 17 students and faculty dead.

That battle over tougher gun measures is waging on in Capitol Hill, too, as Congress struggles to determine what it is the president wants.

Galvano said he included what he thought was necessary for school safety, and he "did not want to include at this point a complete ban on firearms" because he said he thought an assault weapons ban would not be constitutional under the privacy and right to bear arms provisions of Floridas Constitution.

The House also passed a bill lowering the age a person can hide carry from 21 to 18. "Respect 2nd Amendment!" Trump tweeted earlier in the week.

Reverse a state law that bans local governments from enacting stricter gun control measures. "This bill really is unprecedented", said State Sen. Bill Nelson, a Democrat, has pushed for a ban on assault-style rifles.

The sharply-divided legislature spent the day debating a wide-ranging bill drafted in the aftermath of the Parkland school shootings.

Democrats believe the legislation doesn't go far enough in some ways and too far in others.

They argued that a ban on any specific weapon would be unconstitutional, and the first step toward confiscating guns from law-abiding citizens, according to the Tampa Bay Times. "We still have the mental health piece, the school hardening piece, the firearms safety piece and the "school marshal" program is still in the bill". "So, we can do a lot of things, but this is kind of the one thing that is consistent", said State Sen.

Senators voted 21-17 to defeat amendments to add the ban and moratorium to the bill.

Allow family members to take out risk-protection orders, which prevent people who could harm themselves or others, from purchasing guns.

"Adolf Hitler confiscated all the weapons took all the weapons, had a registry of everybody and then on the night of June 30th, 1934, sent out his secret police and murdered all of his political opponents", Simmons said.
