Seven people detained in killing of Slovak Journalist

Anti-mafia prosecutors in Reggio Calabria "officially brought to the attention of the global police organs and the Slovakian national police the need to monitor the activities of the group of Calabrians arrested because they are suspected of being involved in the murder of the young journalist Jan Kuciak and his girlfriend", a statement said.

Candles in memory of murdered investigative journalist Jan Kuciak are seen in Trencin, Slovakia, february 26, 2018.

Slovakia's national police chief Tibor Gaspar says seven people have been detained during raids conducted in eastern Slovakia in connection with the slaying of an investigative journalist.

A Slovak journalist shot dead with his girlfriend was probably targeted for his investigative work, police said on Monday, a case that has shocked the small central European country and highlighted public concerns about corruption.

He and his girlfriend were found dead on Sunday at his home in Velka Maca, 65 km (40 miles) east of the capital Bratislava.

The case connected to the apartment complex helped touch off protests in 2017 seeking the resignation of Interior Minister Robert Kalinak over business dealings with property developer Ladislav Basternak, who has been investigated over possible tax fraud.

Vadalà is an Italian entrepreneur and a former business partner of Maria Troskova, a former model and assistant to Prime Minister Robert Fico who resigned on Wednesday along with national security council secretary Viliam Jasan. Other anti-corruption protests are being planned for Friday across the country as well as in Prague, London and The Hague.

Fico accused the opposition Wednesday of using the murder as a "political tool to get people out on the streets and gain power".

Transparency International ranks Slovakia as the seventh most corrupt European Union member.

Police raided seven locations in eastern Slovakia, Gaspar said on TA3 television.

Jasan and Troskova denied any links to the murder.

Press speculation about the motive for the mysterious murders has been rife in Slovakia.

The allegations were made in Kuciak's last article, which was published posthumously on Wednesday by his news outlet, aktuality.sk.

They said that they were working with Europol, the EU's joint police agency in The Hague, with U.S. investigators from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and with British, Czech, and Italian police to crack the case.

Fico, who once told journalists they were "dirty, anti-Slovak prostitutes" and used terms like "plain, silly hyenas" and "slimy snakes" to describe the media, has vowed his government is committed to the "protection of freedom of speech and the safety of journalists".
