Winter Olympics: Ledecka seals stunning double

The Czech athlete - who also picked up gold in Alpine skiing - becomes the first athlete ever to win both those events at a Winter Olympic Games.

Ledecka plans an early night, with no partying, after her second gold and she will need her energy as she has snowboarding World Cup races in Turkey to come soon before heading to Are, Sweden, for the Alpine World Cup finals in mid-March.

"It feels nearly unbelievable, but we came out here with great intensity and just had to believe we could do it, and make our shots", said America's Matt "Ham" Hamilton. A rare breed of double threat, Ledecka proved that she could run with anyone in any discipline every time she strapped up.

Ledecka, the first athlete to compete in snowboard and Alpine skiing at Winter Olympics, became the second medallist in snowboard for Czech Republic, as Eva Samkova won gold in 2014 and bronze in 2018 at the women's snowboard cross.

One week ago, Ledecka stunned a strong field including defending champion Anna Veith and American star Lindsey Vonn to win the super-G, becoming one of the stories of the Games.

She came into the Olympics top-ranked on the snowboarding circuit but never considered a threat, until now, in skiing. Even her snowboard coach, Justin Reiter, the former USA snowboarder, doubted as recently as last fall that Ledecka could perform at a high level in both.

"I love racing. This is the best thing about my job - the racing".

With just one day out, Norway leads the medals table on 13 golds while China, next host of the Winter Olympics, is 16th with one gold.

The Czech then blew away Austrian Daniela Ulbing, while Ramona Hofmeister was no match in the semifinal, wiping out as she tried in vain to catch Ledecka.

She must be the greatest athlete at these Games, right?

Ledecka has a rich Olympic bloodline. "I was here many days, I'm really looking forward to getting home", she said.

"It made everybody think about how much better we could all ski the course", Shiffrin added.

"This year she prioritised her health over her training -- in the past she didn't rest enough so this year we managed everything as perfectly as can be".

But make no mistake, switching back and forth is not as easy as she made it look. "I will just go to bed because I'm quite exhausted".

"Today was a big day for snowboard Ester! If she had absorbed all the energy from the super-G and just checked off the Olympic medal, we would be having a different conversation today", he said. She said she was too busy to give her last name.

He was followed by Russian athlete Alexander Bolshunov, who ended 18.7 seconds behind. She would've been disappointed to leave these Games with super-G gold but no snowboard medal.
