China Poised to Eliminate Presidential Term Limits

The Communist Party of China has proposed to remove the clause in the constitution that limits presidents to serving for only two five-year terms.

The Communist Party confirmed Xi's second five-year term as president in October.

Xi was elected as the head of the party and president in 2013 and later took over as head of the military.

China will remove the constitutional restriction for the maximum number of terms the president and vice-president can serve, making it legal for Xi Jinping to be president for life.

During the 19th National Congress, no clear successor for Xi was appointed, leading to speculation that he planned to stay in power after his two terms in office.

But already in autumn of a year ago, party leaders had indicated that Convention was nothing more than a convention, and could be disposed of quietly.

US President Donald Trump said at the weekend during Mr Turnbull's visit to Washington that the US would "love" Australia to be involved in so-called freedom-of-navigation operations - also known as FONOPs - in the South China Sea.

"Whether Xi ends up being Party Chairman or just remains Party Secretary doesn't really matter". In other words, the world of Mao Zedong must never threaten the path of modern China, nor must people become downtrodden based on the political whims of an all-encompassing ruler who dictates to the masses.

"In China, ordinary people already consider Xi Jinping to be the emperor", said Zhang Ming, a professor of political science at Renmin of China in Beijing, to Reuters news agency.

'The theoretical justification for removing tenure limits is that China requires a visionary, capable leader to see China through this multi-decade grand plan, ' Lam said.

"He will stay at his pleasure, for as long as he wants to and feels that he needs to do so", said Steve Tsang, director of the SOAS China Institute at the University of London. Officials who have reached the age of 68 or older at the time of the congress customarily retire.

Shops sell commemorative plates and memorabilia with his image alongside Mao's and he has accumulated so many political and military titles - from president, to Central Military Commission chairman and party "core" - that he has earned the nickname "Chairman of Everything".

When Xi did assume the top spot in 2012, it was as head of a reduced seven-member committee on which he had only one reliable ally, veteran Wang Qishan. Wang, in the end, didn't remain on the PSC-though there's still a chance that he may not actually retire.

Its mandate has been characterized, abroad, by an increasingly prominent presence of China on worldwide stage: Xi has presented itself as a defender of economic globalization and fight against climate change and has offered its country as an alternative to The isolationist tendencies of United States during era of Donald Trump.
