Met Éireann warn of 'exceptionally cold weather' next week

Saturday and Sunday will be even colder still, with lows of -2 and -3 on Saturday and Sunday night respectively, with a widespread sharp to severe frost.

The cold spell will start this weekend, with temperatures rising no higher than 8 degrees during the afternoon on Friday and dropping to as low as -1 at night.

Power cuts and mobile phone services may also be affected.

"There is the potential for travel delays on roads, stranding some vehicles and passengers, as well as delays or cancellations to rail and air travel".

Met Éireann says the looming Siberian temperature crash and snow that will hit Ireland in the first week of Spring is a type of weather system that could last for weeks.

She said: "Temperatures are expected to fall well below normal widely across Europe through this week and continue into the beginning of March".

The freezing winds are forecast to sweep in from Scandinavia due to the influence of a high pressure zone. Add to this a strong easterly wind and it will feel more like -3°C to -7°C.

"Top temperatures of just 5C to 8C, coldest in the east and north".

"Sunday will be a dry and sunny day". One or two light showers are also possible, mainly in the east, and perhaps wintry at times. Minimum Temperature -3 °C.

Today, Friday, is expected to be mostly dry with a mix of cloud and sunny spells; the best of the sunshine is likely in the north.

"There is the potential for locally five to 10cm of snow across eastern parts however where showers become more organised there may be more widespread snow cover".

Overnight, there will be severe frost and the risk of snow showers along the northern and eastern coasts - reaching lows of -2C to -4C. There will be some further sleet and snow, but it doesn't look to be extensive.
