Russian opposition protester jailed for a year

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was reportedly detained Thursday in connection to organizing an unsanctioned rally. He aimed to run for president in next month's election, but was denied a place on the ballot because of a fraud conviction that many view as politically motivated.

Navalny wrote on Twitter on February 22 that police approached him as he was leaving a dentist's office and told him, "You're detained".

The charge, which will be heard by a court at an undisclosed date, could result in a jail sentence of up to 30 days.

The legal manoeuvring was widely interpreted as a precautionary measure, meant to ensure that Navalny could be safely tucked away, if need be, in the prelude to the Russian presidential election March 18.

Navalny has come under increasing pressure from authorities as he has sought to rally Russians against the upcoming election, which he says is a sham and a rigged contest.

The opposition leader is barred from running in March's presidential election.

Mr Navalny, a lawyer and anti-corruption campaigner, later wrote that he had been taken to...

"We want to tear Putin down from his pedestal", Vladimir Milov, an economic adviser and one of Navalny's allies, said in an interview.

The anti-corruption activist has been holding campaign rallies and protests around Russian Federation over the past year, but was barred in December from running against Vladimir Putin in the election due to a politicised embezzlement conviction against him.
