JD Martinez, Red Sox Finally Agree To A Deal

The Boston Red Sox have signed the outfielder/designated hitter to a 5-year deal worth $110 million after a long negotiation process. Martinez can opt out of his contract after two seasons.

The deal is not quite what Martinez envisioned at the start of the season. He batted.303, with 46 homeruns and 104 RBI's last season, which was split between the Detroit Tigers and the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Martinez, on the other hand, hit 45 dingers and held a.890 slugging percentage between Detroit and Arizona. His poor grades in defensive metrics may have hurt his value this offseason, but that doesn't figure to be an issue with the Red Sox. Also in January, chairman Tom Werner said the Red Sox were trying to exercise restraint in their spending. The Diamondbacks will present opposing pitchers with a formidable lineup once again this season, even if a J.D. Martinez reunion proves hard. "People know about that".

D'backs reach deal with Dyson • The Arizona Diamondbacks have agreed to a two-year, $7.5 million deal with outfielder Jarrod Dyson. Henry and Werner also suggested the Red Sox could wind up with the highest payroll in baseball this year, especially if they eventually land Martinez, as most insiders still expect they will. Boston needs to add a power hitter to a lineup that finished last in the American League in home runs a year ago, especially after watching the New York Yankees trade for reigning National League MVP victor Giancarlo Stanton. Jay finished a year ago batting.296 and started 86 games in the outfield for the Chicago Cubs. Martinez tied a major league record by hitting 16 home runs in September alone, batting.404 during that stretch.

"Oh man, just his approach", Price said last week.

Facing righty Pedro Baez in the seventh, Martinez went with an outside pitch and hit it deep into the All You Can Eat section in the Right Field Pavilion - an impressive opposite-field stroke for a righty. "He really took a couple pages out of Miggy's book and he incorporated his own swing into it, and he's reaping the benefits".

In Phoenix, Martinez's power was on display. We had significant pitching that was injured previous year.

With Martinez likely entrenched in the DH spot, that leaves Hanley Ramirez and Mitch Moreland to share duties at first base.
