Mitt Romney Officially Launches Utah Senate Bid

Mitt Romney will run for U.S. Senate in Utah, hoping to capture the seat of outgoing Republican Sen.

A Salt Lake Tribune poll from January shows Romney handily winning the November 2018 race, getting 64% support from those surveyed.

The seat is now held by veteran politician Orrin Hatch, who is set to retire after more than 40 years.

Some Utah Republicans may still question whether the one-time abortion-rights supporter is too much of an outsider or too moderate for their tastes, but he's not expected to face any serious primary or general election challenge.

For his part, Trump has said Romney "choked like a dog" in his failed presidential bids in 2012 and four years earlier, when Romney lost the GOP nomination to Arizona Sen. He previously ran for the U.S. Senate in 1994, losing to the late Ted Kennedy of MA.

Romney also takes a semi-veiled swipe at President Donald Trump, with whom he's feuded since the 2016 presidential campaign.

"Dishonesty is Donald Trump's hallmark", Romney added.

"Utah welcomes legal immigrants from around the world".

Romney had originally planned to make his announcement Thursday but delayed the announcement because of the school shooting in Parkland, Fla., on Wednesday.

In an apparent dig at President Trump's penchant for engaging in feuds with other public figures, Romney declared that at the Utah Capitol Building, "people treat others with respect". "Washington send immigrants a message of exclusion".

House Speaker Paul Ryan, whom Romney tapped as his vice presidential running mate in 2012, immediately hailed his old partner's "unparalleled experience, conservative leadership and lifetime of service".

The upcoming mid-terms are likely to see more traditional Republicans such as Romney running alongside more populist, Trump-like candidates.

Hatch, 83, retires as the most senior Senate Republican, having served in the Senate since 1976.

"I'm thrilled Mitt has made a decision to run", he tweeted.
