UFC 221 Results: Yoel Romero Sleeps Luke Rockhold In Third Round

Jussier Formiga of Brazil submits Ben Nguyen in their flyweight bout during the UFC 221 event at Perth Arena on February 11, 2018 in Perth, Australia.

With the win, however, Romero may well have earned himself a shot at undisputed champion Robert Whittaker and a chance to avenge the only defeat of his ten-fight stint in the UFC anyway.

In other action, UFC veteran and Aussie favourite Mark Hunt was beaten via a unanimous decision by Curtis Blaydes in their heavyweight contest.

Shaw does admit that the weight issues did put a little bit of a damper on the UFC 221 festivities.

Romero hit the sauna in a bid to lose the excess weight, but when he returned he weighed in at 187.7.

In the main event of last night's UFC 221 event, Yoel Romero knocked out Luke Rockhold in the third round to take home the victory. Both camps hesitated to accept the amended terms, which called for Rockhold to get 30 percent of Romero's purse and called for only Rockhold to fight for the interim belt.

It's not that I had a problem with Luke Jumeau winning - I thought he would get the nod 29-28 against Daichi Abe - but when the scores read 29-27, 28-27 and 29-28, I would kind of like to know how those officials handed out the eights, nines and 10s to arrive at those totals.

The fight kicked off at a glacial pace, with Rockhold establishing the distance and picking at Romero with leg kicks.

Fight of the Night honors went to Jake Matthews and Li Jingliang, who battle the full three rounds of their main card bout.

"For us, it's never good when fighters miss weight, so I think it sort of takes a bit away from the main event", said Shaw. "I'm glad that the main event fight continued, obviously". This streak is highlighted by wins over Brad Tavares, Uriah Hall, Rafael Natal, Derek Brunson, "Jacare", and of course, Romero.

Had he beaten Romero, Rockhold might have chose to stick around for a crack at Whittaker but after falling to his second defeat in three fights, a move 20lbs north can't be far away for the 33-year-old veteran.

The fireworks came just before that bout though, when two more unknown heavyweights in Tai Tuivasa and Cyril Asker battled it out.
