Reuters report on Myanmar massacre brings calls for independent probe

When Mr Johnson meets Ms Suu Kyi on Sunday he is expected to discuss the Rakhine crisis and press for the safe return of refugees.

"While I welcome steps by both the Burmese and Bangladeshi governments towards ensuring that these people can return home, it is vital that the Rohingya refugees must be allowed to their homes in Rakhine voluntarily, in safety and with dignity, under global oversight, and when the conditions in Burma are right".

Human rights organisations have documented widespread abuse by the Myanmar Army against the Rohingya, including murders and rapes, during its military campaign against the minority, which the United Nations has described as a "textbook example of ethnic cleansing".

Doctors Without Borders estimates at least 6,700 Rohingya died in the first month of violence.

"This once more attests to the need for a full and thorough investigation by the authorities of all violence in Rakhine State and attacks on the various communities there", United Nations spokesman Farhan Haq told reporters.

"It's about finding a political solution, finding an answer in Myanmar, from Burma, creating the conditions for a safe dignified return for these people".

One, the chilling report is based on firsthand accounts of Rakhine Buddhist villagers who confessed to actively taking part in burning Rohingya homes and killing Rohingya Muslims.

But the Nobel laureate has refused to change tack and is accused by critics of adopting a siege mentality.

The arrests were "not because of Reuters news".

We cannot help but ask, now that Rakhine Buddhists and Myanmar's security personnel themselves have come forward and substantiated evidence of the mass murder by the military and Buddhist villagers, how can Myanmar continue to deny the truth?

The killings of 10 Rohingya men occurred in the village of Inn Din in September past year and the bodies were buried in a mass grave after they were hacked to death or shot and killed by Buddhist neighbours and Myanmar soldiers.

Others have no home to return to after their villages were torched in the military crackdown.

Buddhist villagers reported no attack by a large number of insurgents on security forces in Inn Din and Rohingya witnesses said that soldiers plucked the 10 from among hundreds of men, women and children who had sought safety on a nearby beach. Two police officers were also arrested, on the same charge of violating a colonial-era law.
