Officer slain, deputies wounded, suspect dead near Atlanta

The neighbor told Fernandes that she thought the gunshots were firecrackers until she saw all the first responders descend on Saint Francis Court.

But while trying to serve the warrant, an altercation broke out, according to the sheriff, and all three officers were shot. He said the officer's wife was expecting their second child "any day now".

Several media reports stated that it happened as the officers were serving an arrest warrant at a home in Locust Grove, about 40 miles (64 kilometers) southeast of Atlanta.

A police officer was shot dead and two sheriff's deputies were wounded on Friday in a small Georgia town by a gunman who was then killed, the county sheriff said.

Henry County Sheriff Keith McBrayer announced the death at an afternoon news conference. The other was in fair condition, and was hit in the vest. The two injured deputies were Michael Corley and Ralph Sidwell "Sid" Callaway, both with the Henry County Sheriff's Office.

"We just can't believe this happened", he said.
