Pence in Japan to boost pressure on North Korea

Earlier, North Korea confirmed that the sister of leader Kim Jong-un, Kim Yo-jong, will become the nation's highest-ranked official to visit the South when she attends the opening ceremony.

"It shows the North's resolve to defuse tension on the Korean Peninsula", Blue House spokesman Kim Eui-kyeom told a news briefing. Kim works on North Korean propaganda and helps maintain her brother's image while handling the logistics of his travel, according to multiple reports.

Supplying the fuel would be a hard decision for South Korea amid concerns that the North is trying to use the Olympics to weaken USA -led worldwide sanctions and pressure on Pyongyang to give up its nuclear and missile programs.

"And that is that North Korea must once and for all abandon its nuclear weapons program and ballistic missile ambitions", he added.

The NIS said tens of billions of won in cryptocurrency were stolen from South Korea cryptocurrency exchanges past year through North Korean cyberattacks, which partly involved the sending of hacking emails to members of the exchanges.

The official made the comment after US Vice President Mike Pence did not dismiss the possibility of having contact with North Korean officials as he leads a US delegation to the Olympics, which will open Friday.

Additional reporting from Newsy affiliate CNN. "We are not going to be lulled by the Olympic experience and North Korea marching with their South Korean... friends or family or whatever, and giving them a platform to put on their charm offensive". Two of his top VIPs are from the United States and North Korea, which have traded nuclear threats.

"To that end, I'm announcing today the United States of America will soon unveil the toughest and most aggressive round of economic sanctions on North Korea ever".

South Korea's national spy agency told a parliamentary committee it was possible North Korean hackers broke into the Japanese cryptocurrency exchange Coincheck Inc.to steal $520 million worth of digital coins, a source familiar with the matter said Tuesday.

A South Korean official said that the military event was held from around 11:30 a.m.to 1 p.m., marking the 70th anniversary of the founding of the North Korean People's Army. But South Korea has been flexible with these rules as it accommodates the North Koreans to the Pyeongchang Games. Now South Korean officials are debating if they can even fuel the ship for the North Koreans. His son Otto died shortly after being released from North Korean captivity previous year.

To avoid offending Japan at the Games, a South Korean figure skating pair chose to change the lyrics of a popular Korean folk ballad that will form part of their routine, dropping a reference in the song to disputed islands.

As Kim Jong Un's sister and a vice director with the ruling political party, Kim Yo Jong is seen by some in the South Korean media as a moderating force on her more impulsive brother, much the way Ivanka Trump is seen by some USA pundits as a moderate influence on her father, President Trump.

On Wednesday, 280 North Koreans, including four officials, 229 cheerleaders, 26 members of a Taekwondo demonstration team and 21 reporters arrived in the South by land, joining 73 others, including 22 athletes already in the country.

In an effort to improve inter-Korean relations, South Korea has allowed increase access to North Koreans, but such a high-level delegation runs the risk of bumping up against an absolute ban on luxury goods to Pyongyang.
