Olympian Shani Davis Slams Opening Ceremony Flag Bearer Coin Toss

She will be the fourth luger to serve as the United States flag bearer, and the first since 2010.

Luger Erin Hamlin will carry the flag for the US. Hamlin, who won bronze in Sochi, will be leading a contingent of 244 athletes - the most the USA has ever sent to the Winter Games. Despite that resume, Hamlin - who is retiring after the Olympics - never thought she would be the pick.

Davis' mother, Cherie Davis, said she was unaware of the tweet until an AP reporter spoke to her by phone.

As ESPN noted, Davis has a history of throwing tantrums, and this is not the first time he has caused an Olympic controversy.

Davis referenced Black History Month in that tweet.

At the 2006 Winter Games in Turin, Italy, he became the first African American athlete to win individual gold at the Winter Olympics. I tell you what, I can't wait.

Voting for Hamlin and speedskater Shani Davis was tied for the honor, which led to the victor being chosen by a coin toss.

He implied that race played a factor in the decision. Davis is a long track speed skater and a four-time medalist at the Olympics, with two gold and two silver.

Davis has also always been outspoken, criticizing the USOC for the suits the team used during the 2014 Games and how NBC portrayed him in the previous Olympics.

Speaking before Davis' tweet, Hamlin said her family would be thrilled to watch her carry the flag. That's just that."U.S. speedskater Joey Mantia said". It's also a popularity contest, and the perception of Davis - framed by a prickly relationship with the United States media, his longstanding decision to train separately from the national team, and a much-publicised feud with fellow American Chad Hedrick during the 2006 Games - might have persuaded some voters to go with Hamlin.

Although he implies he'll be back in 2022, it is likely this will be Davis' last Olympic appearance.
