Amtrak, CSX Train Crash In South Carolina

A Sunday morning crash involving an Amtrak passenger train and a freight train in Cayce, South Carolina, killed at least two people and injured more than 100.

The collision took place near Charleston Highway and Pine Ridge Road around 2:35 a.m. Officials say it involved Amtrak Train 91 which was operating between NY and Miami.

"It appears that the Amtrak was on the wrong track", McMaster said Sunday.

"It appears the Amtrak train was on the wrong track", the governor said, while cautioning that a full investigation was needed to determine the exact cause.

Amtrak says the lead engine and a few passenger cars derailed.

The victims were identified as train engineer Michael Kempf, 54, of Savannah, Georgia, and a conductor, Michael Cella, 36 of Orange Park, Florida, according to Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher. Her injuries were minor, but waiting for help in the dark was terrifying, she told Neblett.

The train, traveling from NY to Miami, was carrying 139 passengers and eight crew members. CSX is the owner of the track but Amtrak uses the line. Positive Train Control, according to sources, likely would've prevented the crash.

"They weren't supposed to be meeting, clearly", McMaster said.

"It's a disgusting thing to see - to understand the force that this involved", Mr. McMaster said. That is, this was a loading track or a sidetrack... where the collision took place. Two of those patients are expected to be admitted to the hospital.

Shelton added the "majority" of patients did not sustain life-threatening injuries. His mother was in the third auto of the train on her way back home to Denmark, SC.

A CNN investigation found that engineers and conductors had complained to supervisors that they were not adequately trained for the new route before the crash of Amtrak 501. Roberts said he and the husband of the other woman drove for hours to reach Columbia, not knowing the condition of their loved ones.

At least three patients were hospitalized in critical or serious condition, with almost all the rest treated for minor injuries such as cuts, bruises and whiplash, authorities said. There is no threat to the public, they say.

U.S. Senator Tim Scott tweeted: My prayers are with the families of those killed in the train crash in Lexington County this morning, and hoping for the best for all those injured.

This is the second Amtrak incident in less than seven days. On January 31, a train carrying Republican lawmakers crashed into a garbage truck.
