5 injured in U.S. school shooting

Two students were shot and wounded, one critically, inside a Los Angeles middle school classroom Thursday morning and police arrested a female student believed to be 12 years old, authorities said.

The girl, whose name was not released, was booked at a juvenile detention facility on a charge of negligent discharge of a firearm, said officer Tony Im of the Los Angeles Police Department.

A 15-year-old boy was also shot in the head, and doctors said that it doesn't appear to be life-threatening.

'This child was extremely lucky, ' Dr. Aaron Strumwasser said of the boy during a news conference at the medical center.

Three others - a 30-year-old female staff member at the school and two other students, an 11-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl - suffered superficial face and head injuries, police said.

Parent Claudia Anzueto, 41, said her 12-year-old son was crying when he used someone else's cellphone to call her. She had been in Calabasas when she heard about the shooting, describing it as a "dramatic day". "There's a lot of things I'm sure are going through her mind right now - she's only 12 years old". "She was like, 'I didn't mean to".

"There were numerous kids that ran and other kids that may have left the classroom", Zipperman said.

At least one student who was in the classroom when the shooting occurred told a reporter Thursday that he thought the gunfire was unintentional. "I wanted to cry".
