Trump To End Support For ISS According To Budget Proposal Draft

Now the two-decades old International Space Station program, which provides NASA with its only base in space, is likely up on the chopping block.

Ending funding would be detrimental to NASA, which uses the station to test new technology and train astronauts.

If the Deep Space Gateway program falls behind schedule, ending operations on the ISS prematurely could lead to a gap in US access to space.

An Obama-era action extended the NASA-ISS partnership until 2024, but players in the commercial space industry have pushed for funding for the ISS to be continued beyond that deadline, according to The Verge.

Canceling funding for the ISS would be devastating for NASA's global relationships, the space program and many scientists who rely on the orbiting laboratory to conduct experiments and testing in low gravity. Although only a draft, the final version will be released on February 12.

In the budget documents, seen by The Verge, all financial support from the United States could be terminated by 2025.

NASA did not comment on the leaked budget proposal but said that the partnership between NASA and the ISS continues. After that, the future of the 20 year International Space Station is up in the air.

Funding for the International Space Station is crucial to maintaining our main presence in space, and this habitable artificial satellite located in low Earth orbit is an important part of scientific research and advancement of our knowledge of space.

To compensate for the lack of space shuttles, the plan was to get private companies involved.

The White House has said repeatedly that it intends to recommit the nation to space exploration, in partnership with the private sector and the global community. By 2025, the Presidents wants to cut off money for the space station.

Now that the news is out that this is the case, worldwide partners of the USA that are also invested in the ISS might lose whatever confidence they have left that it is a reliable partner.

"It's one thing to say this is the last space station that will be owned and operated by the federal government", Manber said.

The proposal will also open the door for a commercial launch of the first element of the proposed Deep Space Gateway, a power and propulsion module, in 2022. "What also is a fact is the ISS is still the only game in town that we have at the moment".
