USA Gymnastics says directors will resign

Dr. Larry Nassar will go down as one of the most evil actors in modern American sports history, and Michigan State will go down as one of the saddest administrations in collegiate athletics history because of his actions on campus and the failure to report sexual assault that was happening right under their noses.

Hollis' retirement also comes the same day that ESPN's Outside The Lines published a damning report that alleges Michigan State covered up or ignored sexual assault crimes committed by athletes and coaches on the school's basketball and football programs.

Hollis oversaw the athletic department for over a decade, officially taking on the role of AD on January 1, 2008 after more than a decade working within the department in various roles.

Hollis: "I've always been a Spartan, and I always will be". The school says it has immunity under MI law and that the majority of victims were not MSU students at the time of the alleged assaults. "As athletic director I am responsible to make tomorrow better than today".

Michigan State University's governing board is set to have its first meeting since the resignation of President Lou Anna Simon amid an outcry over the school's handling of disgraced gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar.

But from the bottom, the MSU students want change.

In the press conference, Hollis claimed that he never met Nassar and did not know about the allegations against him until the Indianapolis Star article about them in 2016.

Some of the nation's top gymnasts, including Olympians Aly Raisman, McKayla Maroney, Simone Biles and Jordyn Wieber, said they were among Nassar's victims.

Hollis graduated from the university in 1985.

Led by committee chairman Mark Hollis, the NCAA Basketball Tournament Selection Committee meets on Wednesday afternoon, March 8, 2017 in New York City.

During his time as AD, the Spartans won a national championship in women's cross country, 30 Big Ten Championships, three Final Fours, eight bowl games and the football team appeared in the College Football Playoff.

This pattern of abuse can be traced all the way back to 1992 when Nassar was in medical school at Michigan State University. There is no evidence Simon was aware Nassar was committing acts of abuse, but some of the more than 150 accusers said their complaints to the school over the years were not addressed.

"My heart breaks, my heart breaks thinking about the incomprehensible pain all of them [Nassar victims] and their families have experienced". Along with many I was brought to tears as I listened to the statements.

Students say the discussion about the sexual assault problem on campus is long overdue.

So, forgive me if I find the victory of Hollis' "retirement" just a bit too little, too late for the victims of Nassar. "Larry meticulously groomed me for the goal of exploiting me for his own sexual gain", Rachael Denhollander, the first women to publicly accuse the doctor, told Judge Aquilina.

Athletic departments are supposed to be there to help the student-athlete become successful in life and to protect and guide them through hard times.

The board plans to ask an independent third party to review health and safety at the school, and it wants state Attorney General Bill Schuette to consider appointing a neutral investigator to conduct an inquiry of the Nassar matter.
