Justice Department will re-try Sen. Menendez

Federal authorities announced on January 19 that they will seek to retry U.S. Senator Robert Menendez on corruption charges, Politico wrote. Robert Menendez after his trial on corruption charges previous year ended in mistrial. The filing to the judge seeks a retrial "at the earliest possible date". "The only thing I can possibly think of is that you can't believe that a Latino kid who grew up poor and ultimately comes from this county that has a history - somehow, how does he get to be a USA senator without doing things that are wrong?", the Senator said.

After November's hung jury, Menendez suggested that he was ready to run for reelection this November, despite polls showing voters don't want him to.

The Justice Department said it plans to re-try Sen. Menendez, who has represented New Jersey in the Senate since 2006, is running for another six-year term this year, and the state's Democratic leaders have supported his bid despite the federal charges.

The senator is accused of trying to win political favors for Salomon Melgen, a wealthy eye doctor who gave Menendez gifts and donations.

A spokesman and a lawyer for Menendez did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

"We regret that the DOJ, after spending millions and millions of taxpayer dollars, and failing to prove a single allegation in a court of law, has chose to double down on an unjust prosecution". "Evidently, they did not hear the overwhelming voices of the New Jerseyans who served on the jury this fall".

The weeks-long trial brought several dramatic moments, particularly when a juror who was dismissed for a planned vacation told reporters during deliberations that the jury was divided in the case, and that she thought Menendez should be found not guilty. "Menendez fully intends to be vindicated - again".

Menendez argues that he and Melgen are longtime friends, and that there was no corrupt intent to commit a federal crime. Prosecutors said Menendez pressured high-level officials in the Obama administration and other career diplomats to help Melgen resolve his business disputes in exchange for political contributions, a luxurious hotel suite at the Park Hyatt in Paris and free rides on Melgen's private jet that Menendez failed to report on his Senate disclosure form.
