Fired Google engineer's suit claims reverse discrimination

The former Google engineer who was sacked over a memo he wrote that suggested biological reasons are behind the predominance of male engineers at the company filed a lawsuit in state court on Monday.

Damore is filing the suit alongside David Gudeman, another former Google employee, according to Reuters.

It goes on to write that Google employs "illegal hiring quote to fill its desired percentages of women and favored minority candidates, and openly shames managers of business units who fail to meet their quotas - in the process, openly denigrating male and Caucasian employees as less favored than others". Damore, who also filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board, appeared to embrace his rising political visibility, posing in a t-shirt with the word "Goolag" written in a multi-colored style that mimicked Google's familiar logo.

The suit claims white men were booed at company-wide meetings: "Not only was the numerical presence of women celebrated at Google exclusively due to their gender, but the presence of Caucasians and males was mocked with "boos" during company-wide weekly meetings".

Now he is suing his former employer for workplace discrimination, claiming that Google is biased against white men with conservative views.

The suit claims employees were awarded peer bonuses for arguing against Damore: "In one example of this, an employee gave a Peer Bonus to another employee, and stated that the bonus was for 'speaking up for googley values and promoting [diversity and inclusion] in the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is [Damore's Memo].' The Google Recognition Team reviewed this justification, considered it appropriate, and allowed the bonus to proceed". The company is 69% male and 56% white, although Google does not report how many describe themselves as "conservative".

James Damore was fired from his engineering job at Google a year ago after he wrote a memo that criticized the company's diversity efforts and argued that the low number of women in engineering positions was a result of biological differences.

The memo highlights some of the reasons, aside from bias, why there may be a disparity between the amount of men and women working in the tech field and non-discriminatory solutions to fixing the gap. Google terminated Damore for the memo, saying it was contrary to the company's basic values and code of conduct.
