American Red Cross In Need Of Blood Donors, Officials Say

The American Red Cross is issuing an urgent call for blood and platelet donors Monday to help tackle a winter blood shortage.

Kesselring touches on the effects of weather on current blood donations."We have lost 158 blood drives due to severe winter weather that has caused us to lose about 55 hundred pints of blood collected. Sometimes they'll send a friend or family member in their spot to donate so we don't lose that blood product".

January is officially known as National Blood Donor Month.

A recent press released stated donations during the holiday season were lower than anticipated, placing the Central Texas blood supply at a "dangerously low" level.

The blood donated helps those undergoing surgeries, in accidents, and cancer patients. "So this blood drive here at Chemours has been so timely".

Over 40 hospitals and medical facilities in a 10-county area depend on the supply of blood provided by We Are Blood.

Eligible donors with types O, A negative and B negative blood are urged to make a Power Red donation, where available.

O-negative, the universal blood type that's always in high demand, can be given to patients of any blood type. Their shelf life is very short - only five days - while whole blood or red cell donations can last 42 days.

Individuals who are as young as 16 years of age (with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in general good health may be eligible to donate blood, according to the release.
