McDonough bids farewell to Gruden during broadcast

Jan 08, 2018, 03:10

He will be introduced by the Raiders at a media conference on Tuesday and replaces Jack Del Rio, who was sacked on December 31.

Gruden reportedly will receive a 10-year contract worth $100 million.

Gruden, 54, last coached in the National Football League in the 2008 season for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The worst-kept secret of the week has been confirmed: Jon Gruden will return to coach the Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders fired Jack Del Rio after the team went 6-10 following a season in which they made the playoffs with a record of 12-4.

With Gruden's impending return to the Silver & Black sidelines, it seems like the ideal time to take a look back at one of the most famous (infamous?) trades in Raiders history.

The defensive line struggles with defense coordinator Ken Norton Jr., leading to a late-season firing and replacement with John Pagano. He served in that role from 1998 through 2001, before being traded to Tampa Bay.

In 2006, former owner Al Davis hired Art Shell, after firing him the first time.

Gruden beat the Raiders in the Super Bowl in his first season with the Buccaneers but didn't win another playoff game for Tampa Bay in his final six seasons. Shell's firing came after one year, and after the Raiders ended the season 2-14. It won't happen Saturday, because Gruden has obligations with his current employer, ESPN, and it won't be Monday because that's when he's expected to "interview" for his new gig.

"There's a great legacy on 'Monday Night Football, ' " McDonough said.

It's official, Jon, even if the Raiders haven't yet issued a statement.

Gruden has not coached since 2008 and has been working as an National Football League television analyst for the last nine years.
