Philippe Coutinho signs with Barcelona

The Reds are expected to receive £105m up front - a British record - for the 25-year-old Brazil global, with the rest in realistic add-ons.

According to Barcelona, the Brazilian will sign a five-and-a-half-year contract, with a buyout clause of 400m Euros (£354.6m).

The transfer cost is only surpassed by the Paris Saint-Germain acquisition of Neymar last summer - and the impending permanent transfer of Kylian Mbappe at season's end.

Liverpool rejected three bids from Barcelona for Coutinho in August.

Liverpool have reached an agreement with Barcelona for the sale of Philippe Coutinho, sources have confirmed to ESPN FC.

"It is no secret that Philippe has wanted this move to happen since July, when Barcelona first made their interest known".

The PA report said it was understood that Liverpool have not yet received any approach from Barcelona for Coutinho in the current window, which conflicts with reports emerging from Spain on Saturday.

"Listen, Coutinho's a fantastic player, he will be a great player for them for sure".

"Despite that, we managed to keep the player here beyond the summer window, hoping that we would be able to persuade him to stay and be part of what we are looking to do".

The Brazil global, now sidelined with a thigh injury, was among a number of first-team players - undisclosed by the club - who stayed behind on Merseyside.

He will not be eligible to play for Barcelona in their Champions League last-16 tie against Chelsea, having already played a key role in Liverpool's qualification for the knockout phase.
