Sightseeing balloon crashes in Egypt's Luxor city killing one USA tourist

The woman killed was a 36-year-old South African and the injured were tourists from Spain, South Africa and Argentina, according to a government official.

The balloon was travelling over the ancient city when it was forced off course and into a mountainous area by strong winds, according to reports.

A hot air balloon carrying tourists has crashed near the Egyptian city of Luxor, with one person killed and several injured, officials say.

A fact-finding committee later found that the accident was probably caused by a gas leak near the burner, sparking a blaze that spread throughout the balloon.

Egypt's civil aviation ministry said 21 hot air balloons had taken off and landed with no incident on Friday but the one that crashed had landed too forcefully. Of the 12 injured, two were in a serious condition, MENA said.

Luxor has suffered a series of hot air balloon accidents.

In 2013, 19 people a lot of them Asian and European tourists, died near Luxor when a hot air balloon caught fire and crashed after a mid-air gas explosion.
