World Health Organization adds video game addiction to diagnostic manual

To warrant a diagnosis of such a disorder, one shall have "impaired control over gaming" and give "increasing priority to gaming to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other life interests and daily activities" and continue gaming "despite the occurrence of negative effect", according to the draft.

The beta draft guidance mentions that video game playing, either offline or online, must be "normally evident over a period of at least 12 months" for this diagnosis to be made. "We've also seen gaming addiction leading to sleep disturbances, poor eating, irritability and loss of productivity", he said. So if you receive treatment for your gaming addiction, you could theoretically get it paid for through insurance, much like other forms of addictive behavior.

Public opinions and knee-jerk reactions aside, virtually any sort of hobby or fun can become addicting to the right personality.

However, the American Psychological Association counters this view, finding it to be controversial and perhaps too early to say. At present, little clarity has been achieved regarding diagnostic criteria and appropriate symptoms. For nearly 30 years people's lifestyles have changed and that includes the growth of gaming in most people's lives.

The inclusion of gaming disorder in the ICD-11 means health care workers and doctors can now diagnose someone with the condition.

The term "gaming disorder" isn't limited to simply excessive time spent playing video games in the entry.
