Tranquil weather will continue through Friday, but Christmas forecast still complicated

In terms of weather record-keeping, a white Christmas is typically defined as having 1 inch or more of snow on the ground on Christmas Day, and the Carolinas' chances of that happening throughout history are nearly zero.

The mild temperatures are expected to last throughout the Christmas days, with afternoon temperatures between 6 and 9 degrees. The next chance will come on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day but confidence in snowfall, let alone accumulation, remains low.

BUT... We've now gone a week without any snow reinforcements, and in fact, we have even had a few light rain events.

The last time the United Kingdom experienced a White Christmas was in 2015 when some weather stations saw snowfall, but the last time that snow was reported lying on the ground was 2010. The simple answer is that when it comes to the forecast Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, we have neither run-to-run consistency or computer model agreement so far, which makes the forecast very tricky.

Friday: A cold front will advance east across the Tennessee Valley and Midwest, with rain arriving in the Appalachians during the afternoon and evening.

Even though temperatures will be trending above normal through the week, hope shouldn't be lost on a white Christmas just yet.

Consequently the snow line will rise to over 1,000m, with heavy rain forecast below that level in many places on Friday night.

Will it stay wet and windy for Christmas? Granted these areas have a lot more snow on the ground than Boston, but still, this will be a significant blow to the existing snow-pack in the entire region.

THURSDAY: Much colder and windy with snow.

Although the name has been selected, the Met Office will not yet put "Storm Dylan" into use until "medium weather impact" from rain, wind or snow is forecast.

As cold approaches for Christmas, AccuWeather said one scenario shows it holding back, while the other bringing it along the mid-Atlantic coast.
