FIRST ALERT FORECAST: Strong cold front sends temperatures plunging

Highest temperatures of 12 or 13 degrees with fresh to strong southerly winds, which will veer northwesterly as the rain clears.

Rain and thunderstorms from this cold front will taper off from west to east this evening as the Arctic air moves in behind the front.

Adding to the misery, there will be showers of rain, sleet and snow expected with the likelihood of snow increasing in the evening and night as temperatures fall to between -2 and +1 degrees.

This is going to be one of those wild weather weeks in Alabama, with an unseasonably warm start and much colder ending.

However, Met Eireann predicts that an Arctic blast will plunge temperatures to a low of -3C from Thursday morning. Locally heavy rain is possible but it will end quickly with cooler, drier air filtering in on Tuesday afternoon. This means that a handful of people, mainly in our NC counties, will have a very slim chance of winter weather Friday morning and possibly Saturday morning. Another shot of cold will keep highs in the twenties. especially if we get a little snow on the ground. Some places could see more than two feet of snow, the weather service said.

Temps: High of 78 degrees Monday and a low of 40 degrees Tuesday night. For the last 10 days high temperatures in Jackson were 70° or above.

Friday will continue very cold with sunny spells and showers of rain, sleet, and snow.

Clouds will return Monday night, but there will be scant chance of any showers. We're certainly looking at a more interesting pattern, which is often the case in December, and we will have lots to talk about in my forecast tonight. Temperatures will drop below freezing Friday morning as the cloud cover decreases.
