State Department calls for arrest of Pakistan cleric Saeed

"Saeed's release, after Pakistan's failure to prosecute or charge him, sends a deeply troubling message about Pakistan's commitment to (combating) worldwide terrorism and belies Pakistani claims that it will not provide sanctuary for terrorists on its soil", the White House said in a statement. The statement went on to say that the LeT is a designated Foreign Terrorist Organisation which was responsible for the death of innocent civilians including American citizens.

"The Pakistani government should make sure that he is arrested and charged for his crimes", state department spokesperson Heather Nauert said in a statement in Washington on Friday.

The Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) chief, who carries a $10 million USA bounty for his role in terrorist activities, was let go after Thursday midnight by Pakistani authorities in Lahore after a court refused to extend his house arrest citing lack of evidence.

Hafiz Saeed, who allegedly planned attacks that left 164 people dead, had been detained at his house in Lahore without charges since January. "The Pakistani government now has an opportunity to demonstrate its seriousness in confronting all forms of terrorism, without distinction, by arresting and charging Hafiz Saeed for his crimes", the White House said.

Saeed was speaking to huge of JuD activists at the Jamia Masjid Al-Qadisa at Chauburji after releasing. The United States has offered a $10 million reward for information leading to his arrest and conviction.

The Department of the Treasury has designated Saeed as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist, and the U.S., since 2012, has offered a United States dollars 10 million reward for information that brings Saeed to justice, Sanders said. We've given them billions and billions of dollars, and what did we get? Sharif is ousted from the prime minister house because he committed treason with Kashmiris.

"I'm happy that no allegation against me was proved", Saeed told supporters after his release in the city of Lahore, according to a video released by the Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) Islamist charity, which he heads.

His release came after a panel of judges dismissed a government request to continue his house arrest, which ended Thursday.

The move to free Saeed infuriated officials in India and the us, who have urged Pakistan to punish those responsible for the Mumbai attacks.

With Beijing financing more than US$55 billion (RM226 billion) of Pakistani infrastructure projects as part of China's Belt and Road initiative, some analysts have suggested that Pakistan can to some extent ignore pressure from the US. "I tell him he was ousted because he committed treason against Pakistan by developing friendship with (Indian Prime Minister Narendra) Modi", he said, warning the PML (N) government not to "take dictation from the USA and other countries and take its own decisions".

The campaign appeared to produce some success this year when Pakistani security forces assisted with the release of a Taliban-held US-Canadian family after five years in captivity.
