Shoppers likely to meet Christmas tree shortage

"Connecticut's Christmas tree growers work hard all year to prepare for this season, and they are looking forward to another great year", Agriculture Commissioner Steven K. Reviczky said.

The National Fire Protection Association says on average, one of every 31 reported Christmas tree fires results in death.

The shortage of Christmas trees has spread to other parts of the country.

Honey Bear has tried to keep its prices for smaller trees in line with recent years, given that people with fewer economic resources tend to purchase those trees.

Poe said the recession took a toll on the farmers, so in the years following the recession not as many trees were able to be planted.

Poe said for the next few years the demand could overtake the supply.

A tradition that some families have kept up for years.

"We don't know when the drought's coming back, and prices don't go down just because the drought went away, you know, temporarily", New said. The couple sold "choose and cut" trees for the past 30 years, and precut trees for the past 20 years.

"I want to try to grow 100 of each species in the nursery and then give 10 or so to different landowners at different elevations", Yeh said.

That's the signature tree of North Carolina, one of the nation's Christmas tree industry powerhouses, said Jennifer Greene, North Carolina Christmas Tree Association executive director.

"We've always had one", she said with a shrug.

And even when local tree sellers can find Yuletide timber to purchase, they've had trouble getting it here.

"Locally", he said, "we should be fine".

Trunks of fresh trees will be white where they were cut.
