GA highway safety leaders ask motorists to drive safely for Thanksgiving holiday

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is warning motorists heading into the Thanksgiving holiday period to follow all traffic laws, including buckling seat belts and never driving impaired. Thanksgiving is traditionally the most traveled holiday.

According to NHTSA, during the 2015 Thanksgiving weekend, 301 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes nationwide, and 53 percent were not their wearing seat belts at the time of the fatal crash. "Our goal is very simple: We want everyone to arrive at their destination safely".

In fact, on this very day a year ago there were 54 crashed on I-40 in Tennessee.

State police will have increased enforcement from tomorrow (Wednesday) through Sunday.

Hovis said, they're trying to prevent that, and keep holiday travelers safe. That means one person was killed or injured in a traffic crash every 10.8 minutes in Missouri over last year's Thanksgiving holiday weekend. State Troopers are out in force beefing up patrols.

Additional troopers will be positioned every 20 miles along the highway on Wednesday and Sunday-the busiest travel days-as part of the I-40 Challenge. "The more people you put on the road, the more of that stuff you're going to see". Excessive speed, driving drunk or under the influence of drugs and not wearing seat belts pose a danger to your life.

"Best thing people can do is plan ahead, leave with plenty of time to get there and practice save driving habits", said Richardson.

Over the past several years, the Patrol has used special traffic enforcement projects to further their efforts to decrease traffic crashes and fatalities. During the MEP, CHP officers will educate motorists and enforce traffic safety laws throughout the state to ensure everyone has a safe holiday.
