Al Franken apologizes after groping, kissing accusation

Leeann Tweeden, who has said that Minnesota Democratic Sen.

Tweeden described the harassment as being part of a script for a USO skit where Franken wrote where he's supposed to kiss her.

"At that moment, I thought to myself, Al Franken did that exact same thing to me", Tweeden says.

Leeann Tweeden, a radio host at KABC 790, wrote that in 2006, she was on a United Services Organization (USO) tour and Franken was the main act.

Tweeden also wrote that she later discovered that Franken had posed for a photo with his hands on her breasts as she slept on a transport plane during the tour.

After an initial statement in which Franken apologized and said the photo showing him groping Tweeden was "intended to be amusing", the senator releases a second, longer statement apologizing and acquiescing to the calls for an ethics investigation.

Tweeden wrote that she avoided Franken as much as she could during the rest of the tour, and made sure she was never alone with him.

Top Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), backed on Thursday Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's (R-Ky.) call for a Senate ethics investigation into the recent sexual assault allegations against Sen. "You forcibly kissed me without my consent, grabbed my breasts while I was sleeping and had someone take a photo of you doing it, knowing I would see it later, and be ashamed".

"I certainly don't remember the rehearsal for the skit in the same way, but I send my sincerest apologies to Leeann.

"I respect women. I don't respect men who don't", said Franken, who joined the Senate in 2009 after a career as a comedian. "It isn't amusing. It's completely inappropriate", he said. I strongly condemn this behavior and the Senate Ethics Committee must open an investigation. "Comedy is no excuse for inappropriate conduct, and I believe there should be an ethics investigation".

She added that she saw Franken a couple of years after the incident occurred, at a USO gala.

"I said "OK" so he would stop badgering me".

"The truth is, what people think of me in light of this is far less important than what people think of women who continue to come forward to tell their stories", Franken said.

"Regardless of party, harassment and assault are completely unacceptable-in the workplace or anywhere else", said McConnell. And they deserve to know that I am their ally and supporter.
