Powerful natural disaster rocks Iranian-Iraqi border

There were no immediate reports of casualties in Iraq after the quake, whose epicenter was in Penjwin, in Sulaimaniyah province, which is in the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region very close to the Iranian border, according to an Iraqi meteorology official.

Pirhossein Koulivand, head of Iran's emergency medical services, told a local television station that the natural disaster led to a power outage in the country's western cities of Mehran and Ilam.

At least six people were killed in the western Iranian town of Qasr-e Shirin, Iran television said.

Iran sits on many major fault lines and is prone to near-daily quakes.

Photos and videos of extensive damage in both Iran and Iraq poured in on social media shortly after the natural disaster.

In 2003, a 6.6-magnitude quake flattened the historic city of Bam, killing 26,000 people.

The quake has also been felt by Turkey, Armenia, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates, and Iran's western, southwestern and northwestern and also central provinces, including the capital, Tehran.

Rudaw reported 50 people hurt in Darbandikhan, about 20 miles southeast of Sulaimani.

Halabja, 10 miles from the Iranian border, is home to the chemical weapons attack by Saddam Hussein in 1988 that killed as many as 5,000 residents in what was called "Bloody Friday".
