One Person Killed in Shooting on US University Campus in Utah

Students at the University of Utah are advised to shelter in place after shots reportedly broke out on campus Monday night.

Police are on the lookout for the suspect, 24-year-old Austin Boutain, who they believe fled into the surrounding foothills.

Police are searching for a suspect.

Salt Lake City police Sgt. Brandon Shearer told the Salt Lake Tribune that "one person is confirmed deceased".

ChenWei Guo, an worldwide student from China, was shot and killed during an attempted carjacking near Red Butte Canyon on Monday night, according to police.

A 24-year-old ex-convict is suspected of shooting the student to death after demanding Guo's vehicle, according to Utah authorities. The couple also were wanted for questioning in connection to the death of a man several days ago in Golden, Colo., according to University of Utah Police Chief Dale Brophy.

Guo, one of thousands of global students at the University of Utah, came to the U.S.in 2012 and dreamed of owning his own consulting company.

"This senseless act of violence has shaken our community and ended the life of a dear son, true friend, and promising scholar", University of Utah President David Pershing said in a statement.

University officials canceled Tuesday classes.

Rachel Tam of Pleasant Grove, Utah, said Tuesday that Guo was a member of the Mormon church and served as a missionary in Provo. An extensive search of upper campus and the hills above Red Butte Canyon is still on going.

The shooting took place about 21:00 local time Monday (03:00 GMT Tuesday), the university reported that gunshots were heard on campus.
