Forecasters eyeing track of potential storm Philippe

Once its north of Cuba the system will start to encounter stronger vertical wind shear as the storm passes over or near south and southeast Florida Sunday morning.

The storm is now about 380 miles southwest of Miami and moving northwest at 20 mph.

The national weather service warned isolated parts of South Florida and Florida Keys could receive up to six inches of rainfall through Sunday, with flash flooding to be expected in urban areas.

An Air Force reconnaissance aircraft measured maximum sustained winds at 35 miles per hour with gusts up to 50 miles per hour.

Tropical storm warnings were in place for parts of Cuba and the Bahamas, and a tropical storm watch was issued for the upper Keys and parts of southeastern Florida. It is expected to move over Cuba and graze the southern tip of Florida before moving into the western Atlantic. On the forecast track, the center of Philippe is predicted to move off of the northern coast of Cuba and into the Florida Straits this evening.

We now have Tropical Storm Phillipe in the Carribean Sea.

Most of the storm's winds will be on the east side of the center, but they will come close enough that forecasters decided watches are necessary.

Whether it works its way up to a name or stays a number, the storm should create extra wetness in an already soggy South Florida.

"The forecast track of the center lies about 35 miles southeast of the Upper Florida Keys and extreme southeast Florida", NHC wrote in a statement on Twitter Saturday.
