Three Men Arrested After Shot Fired at Protesters Near Richard Spencer Speech

Three supporters of white supremacist Richard Spencer were arrested in connection with a shooting after the hate-monger gave a speech in Gainesville, Fla. Colton Fears is the "least active of the three" in white extremist groups, the ADL said, but recently participated in the Charlottesville, Virginia, torch march and Unite the Right rally that sparked protests leaving one dead and 19 others injured.

The three men were all charged with attempted homicide, and Tenbrink was also charged with possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

One of the protesters hit the Jeep with a "baton", according to a police report, and the Jeep pulled away about ten feet.

Tenbrink is under a $3 million bond and the Fears brothers are each under a $1 million bond. No one was hit, and the single shot struck a building nearby.

I am amazed that immediately after being shot at, a victim had the forethought to get the vehicle's license number.

Before 9 p.m. Thursday, an off-duty Alachua County deputy located the Jeep. Local authorities arrested the men about 20 miles north of Gainesville. Tenbrink described himself as a white nationalist and said he was interested in "preserving our heritage and the American way of life".

Gainesville police spokesman Ben Tobias said Friday that he thought it was "reasonable to believe they came here to bring some hatred". The other two suspects, who are brothers, allegedly encouraged Tenbrink to shoot the people in the group. In the end, Thursday's appearance by Richard Spencer was a success - as much as an unwelcome visit from a notorious white nationalist can be.

Before Spencer's speech, the Sun had spoken to Tenbrink and the Fearses.

On Monday, Florida's governor declared a state of emergency to provide resources to law enforcement, and an extensive police presence was on campus for the event. "It appears that the only answer left is violence, and nobody wants that".

Heather Heyer, 32, was killed in Charlotesville on 12 August 2017, when another white supremacist rammed a vehicle into a crowd of pedestrians protesting against the "Unite the Right" rally, yet another violent Spencer-backed event.

Despite the shooting, there was much less violence in Gainesville Thursday than Charlottesville in August, the last time Spencer brought his traveling road show of polo-clad half-wits to a college campus.
