Possible Terrorism In Canada As Officer Stabbed And Pedestrians Struck

Edmonton Police Service Chief Rod Knecht said the officer and his vehicle were rammed by a white Chevrolet Malibu at about 8.15 local time (4.15 GMT) outside Alberta's Commonwealth Stadium.

Police said the suspect, believed to be 30, crashed the auto through a barricade and hit the officer at about 8:15 p.m. local time, sending him flying 15 feet into the air and onto to a police cruiser.

Knecht said the assailant was known to police, but did not release his name. When the driver was asked for identification, he immediately fled the scene and was chased by police towards downtown Edmonton.

The U-Haul hit and injured four pedestrians before it flipped over.

Witness Pat Hannigan told reporters he saw police pull a man from the windshield of the toppled van and estimated that 30 police cars had been chasing it.

Knecht said Edmonton police were working with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police's National Security Enforcement Team and other Canadian security agencies.

The suspect, whose name wasn't released, was arrested after the attack on suspicion of attempted murder and various terrorism charges, police said. After striking the officer, the man got out of his vehicle and stabbed him several times, then fled on foot. He also is charged with one count each of risky operation of a motor vehicle and possession of a weapon for a unsafe goal, according to a charge information sheet filed in Edmonton provincial court.

"It's something that you have nothing to do with it, but at the same time, you have some kind of association with it", Mr. Abdulkadir said in an interview on Monday, in offices just a few blocks from where Constable Chernyk was hit and stabbed.

Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson said the authorities believed there was no further threat and that it had been a "lone wolf" attack.

"I didn't do anything, and I drove", she said. This would make it a lone-wolf attack and the presence of an IS flag in the vehicle points to links with the terror outfit.

"He was arrested for terrorism charges, so he would understand his full jeopardy, however at this point in the investigation, those are the charges that we have laid".

"There were like 10 cop cars following him". It was insane. It just came around the corner, ripping.

Alberta Premier Rachel Notley called the attacks horrific. "If you've got 20 cops chasing one guy and there's pedestrians that are walking down this road?"

"We can not - and will not - let violent extremism take root in our communities", he said.
