Iran's leader warns implications of controversial vote in Iraq

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) held a non-binding referendum last week, in which almost 93 percent of voters backed the referendum, voting in favor of seceding from Iraq and forming a sovereign country.

Ghasemi gave an interview to ILNA news agency in Iran as Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan was arriving for an important visit to Tehran.

The independence referendum was opposed by many countries because it would threaten the integrity of Iraq and it could undermine fight against Islamic State militants.

A Turkish court on Wednesday found 42 former soldiers guilty of trying to kill President Tayyip Erdogan during last year's failed coup, and handed majority life sentences in the highest profile case related to the attempted putsch so far.

In the meantime, Iran's foreign minister on Monday criticized Kurds secession efforts and called for talks between the Iraqi government and the Kurdish authorities to settle their disputes politically, Press TV reported.

Turkey's leader is huddling with Iran's leadership in Teheran and the Iraqi government has demanded that the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) cancel the result of the referendum or face continued sanctions, global isolation, and possible military intervention.

"We regard the secessionist move in Iraq as detrimental to security of the region", Hatami said on Tuesday.

Iran and Turkey have resolved to work together to ease tension in the crisis-hit Middle East region.

Turkey will take stronger steps in retaliation for the Kurdish referendum last week, and has already taken some steps to coordinate with the Iraqi central government and Iran, Erdogan said in Tehran.

The two governments have taken opposing sides in the six-year civil war in Syria but relations have thawed this year with them both joining Russian Federation as co-sponsors of peace talks which began in Kazakstan in January.

Those exercises have also involved forces of the federal government in Baghdad, which has demanded the annulment of the September 25 vote, which returned a 92.7 per cent majority for independence. Some of the accused said they did not believe the court could deliver a fair verdict and had been under political pressure.

On the economic front, Erdogan said he expects closer ties with Iran, as he announced an agreement to increase trade between the two countries from $10bn to $30bn.

On the economic front, Rouhani and Erdogan underlined the goal of tripling two-way trade to $30 billion in 2018, to be processed in their own currencies, easing the pressure on Iran whose banking sector is subject to U.S. sanctions.
